Walking in Dorset

Walking in Dorset
Dorset - some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, and 3,000 miles of public rights of way to explore.

There's rolling downland, a patchwork quilt of fields, a coastline that takes in Bournemouth, Lyme Regis and Poole...if you're coming to Dorset for a walking holiday, then you're truly spoilt for choice.

And spoilt for choice if you're looking for a country cottage or holiday home to stay in as well. From the smallest, most intimate cottages to sprawling farmhouses that'll take your whole family (and a few friends!) Dorset has it all - and some of the country's most stunning views when you gaze out of the window. A personal recommendation is to rent a holiday cottage in Dorset with a company such as Rent My Cottage.

Why not start your Dorset walking holiday on the South West Coast Path? 630 miles of coastline that takes you from Poole Harbour right round the south west tip of Britain. You'll see some of the most spectacular views imaginable - and if you go in the summer, you'll see rare flowers and clouds of butterflies all along the Coast Path.

The stretch from Poole to Weymouth and on to Lyme Regis offers a variety of walks - some easy, some challenging. Whether you want to stretch yourself - or simply enjoy the breathtaking scenery, the Dorset section of the Coast Path won't disappoint you!

Of course, you don't have to walk by the coast. Turn inland towards Bridport or Dorchester and you can walk along field paths and tracks, looking out over downland that seems to stretch for ever. One of my favourite walks ends up in the picturesque village of Powerstock and it gives you chance to visit the ramparts of an Iron Age fort along the way.

If you're feeling a bit more energetic, there are beautiful walks around Stourpaine, climbing gently up into Blandford Forest - if you've got the energy, carry on walking to the fort at Hambledon Hill where the views are truly amazing.

Of course, every good walk ends up in the pub, and one thing you can count on is a warm, Dorset welcome and some of the best home-cooking you'll find anywhere - nearly all of it using local Dorset produce.

Finally, it's back to your Dorset country cottage. At last, your feet can have a rest - while you get the map out and see what Dorset has in store for you tomorrow!
